The article analyzes the experience of federal construction in our country on the example of the Constitution of the RSFSR of 1918, as well as the Constitutions of the USSR of 1924, 1936, 1977 and the modern Russian Constitution of 1993. The positive and negative experience of the Soviet practice of federal relations and national policy needs to be rethought. The model of building federal relations in the modern period is represented by a "strong" federation, which combines elements of the concept of a "strong" state, actively developed in Russian state studies, and the theory of federalism.
