The article covers the reasons for the conclusion of the military union between Magas, the king of Cyrene, and the federation of Cretan cities in the first half of the III century B.C. The author specifies the dating and duration of this agreement on the basis of the Athenaeus message on the Patroklos expedition to Caudos Island. He also suggests the hypothesis about Gortyns desire to strengthen the political positions in Crete by means of the union with Magas and the cities of the southwest part of the island subordinated to it.
