The article investigates the dynamics of ethnic identity and the mechanisms governing its formation. The central argument posits that the strategic utilization of symbols represents a highly effective means of influencing the process of national self-determination. Symbols are theorized to perform a critical function in constructing a cognitive framework of the world for citizens, sustaining collective historical memory, and facilitating the mobilization of ethnic groups. The burgeoning interest in the impact of symbolic representations on national identity is rendered particularly pertinent by the ongoing processes of globalization, which substantially erode cultural boundaries and complicate the self-identification processes of diverse populations. The analysis underscores the contextual dependence of symbol utilization, contingent upon the specific modality of communication employed. Building upon these premises, the author proposes a multi-dimensional matrix for discerning the operative characteristics of symbols, thereby enabling the structured organization of information flows and the quantifiable measurement of the representational prevalence of salient objects within the symbolic system being constructed.
