Burnout syndrome, resilience and life-sense orientations of healthcare workers

The problem of the study was to identify the features of resilience, life-sense orientations and personality orientation of health care workers that contribute to their professional and personal maladaptation. The study involved 109 medical workers at the age from 31 to 68 years. The sample was divided into two groups: the first (59 specialists) - with registered symptoms of burnout syndrome, the second (50 specialists) - without any formed stage of burnout syndrome. The groups did not differ by work experience. The following methods of research were used: "Test of life-meaning orientations" by D.A. Leontiev, "Study of personality orientation" by V. Smekal and M. Kucher, "Test of resilience" by S. Maddi. Statistical analysis included comparative analysis (student's t-test, Mann-Whitney U-test), Spearman correlation analysis. It is revealed that professionals with symptoms of burnout describes a reduced ability to withstand a stressful situation; the lack of purpose in life, dissatisfaction with her life, past and present, lack of confidence in ability to control events of life, the desire to satisfy its own claims to personal superiority, without regard to the feelings and emotions of other people. There is a correlation between the components of the burnout syndrome, resilience, and life-sense orientations of the individual. A high level of resilience and formed life-sense orientations help to resist emotional and informational stresses in professional activities.
