Synthesis of the biblical and the ancient in the tractate on "The resurrection of the flesh" by Tertullian

Бесплатный доступ

The article analyses the passages from Tertullian's treatise On the resurrection of the flesh, where either an ancient image is introduced into the biblical context (due to which the Old Testament passages acquire new nuances) or the Holy Writ words are changed under the influence of ancient Greek/Roman ideas or literary monuments. It concerns the interpretation of the word φοῖνιξ from psalm 91as a phoenix, reference to "the most ancient carcases of the giants", use of the changed by apologists verse Is. 58:8 and replacement of "the brass gates" by "the adamantine gates" from Ps. 106:16. The synthesis of biblical and ancient elements by Tertullian is regarded as harmonic and doesn't affect the essence of the Christian teaching, making it simpler and clearer for pagans.
