The article deals with the study of the system of the voices in the story “The Portrait” by M. Oliphant. The system is presented by the specific two-voices of the main character Philip Сanning - the narrator and the protagonist by the voice of Сanning's squire actualizing the authority of his consciousness that echo with him the voices of the butler Morhy and the attorney Stevens, the voices of Mary Jordan and other women, and the voice potential of the ghost of the mother of the protagonist.
