The article shows that the question of the number of revolutions in 1917 is a fundamental one. The traditional approach of Soviet historical science and a part of modern historiography with two revolutions, the February and October ones, does not allow us to assess the actions of the Bolsheviks properly. The consequences of February turned out to be too devastating for the Russian state. The Bolsheviks turned out to be the only party capable of resisting popular permissiveness. Therefore, the actions they took at the turn of 1917-1918, first of all, the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly, objectively fall into the category of counterrevolutionary ones. Only the interpretation of these events as a single revolution can correctly assess what happened. In this case, October is the second stage of the unified revolution, overcoming the negative influence of February. At the same time, such an interpretation does not detract from the role of the Bolsheviks in the revolutionary events, but only strengthens their significance in the period under review.
