The sculptures of apostles on the facade of the temple of the nativity of the holy virgin in Podmoklovo

The present study is an attempt to interpret the sculpture decoration of the Church in Podmoklovo according to the sign system of aristocratic culture during the reign of Peter the First. In this particular example one can see that his reformation not so much broke the tradition, as transformed it, developing the tendencies, that had already appeared in the middle of the 17th century. The religious character of the transformative actions made by the tzar»s сompanions should be acknowledged the key factor for understanding of this phenomenon.
