The paper provides information that can give an overall picture of Tikhvin development before of the Prechistenskiy churchyard appeared and the Assumption Cathedral was built by summarizing collected archaeological materials. It publishes comparative data from the level of undisturbed sediments within the compound of the Great Assumption Monastery and its surroundings to attempt to reconstruct microrelief. A stratum of sandy loam sediments on the bedrock which, presumably, formed in the period up to the 14 th century was singled out stratigraphically. Few archaeological finds illustrate the results.
