A case of symbolic skull trepanation among the finds in the eastern part of the Moscow Kremlin

Бесплатный доступ

The paper discusses the case of a likely symbolic trepanation of the skull found in the course of examination of miscellaneous anthropological remnants. The tradition of making specific marks on the cranial vault is typical for many mobile population groups. This case of symbolic trepanation may demonstrate that such groups were present within the Moscow Kremlin area. The tradition was most widely accepted in the medieval period, which may be a relative chronological indicator for this burial.
