The analysis of conducted in the late 80s social and economic reforms helped to identify factors, which influenced the process of reconstruction and its final outcome. The obtained results are important for the development of contemporary society. The reconstruction of economic, social, and political life of the Soviet Union began during the second half of the 1980s. The conducted reforms and their results generated a rather diverse interest to the processes, which occurred in the country. The success of socio-economic reforms, carried out during this reconstruction period, was largely determined by the change of stereotypes in people’s thinking and behavior. The article discusses the change in economic thinking as one of the manifestations of the state policy carried out within the frameworks of economic reconstruction. The author reveals specifics of the process, which reflect the change in economic thinking. Characteristic features of the new type of economic thinking are presented in the article. The newly developed economic thinking has contributed to the formation of such human qualities as proactiveness, entrepreneurial spirit, “sense of ownership”, rationality, and responsibility. The impact of real changes in the country’s economy of the late 1980s - early 1990s on the formation of new economic thinking is considered. Specifics of this process are identified. The influence of this process on the choice of transition strategy, which was rather radical, is determined.
