Sobolevo 2 - settlement of the late D'yakovo final stage in the Upper Volga region

Бесплатный доступ

The studies of cultural transformations of the late D'yakovo antiquities demonstrate that one-layer sites that existed for a short period of time are the most reliable sources. One of such settlements dating to the 5th-6th centuries was discovered in the Upper Volga region after analysis of the preserved pottery collection. This unfortified settlement is known as Sobolevo 2. The ceramic and artifact assemblages are similar, though not analogous to those retrieved from nearby multi-layer late D'yakovo fortified settlements and are also distinguished from Moshchiny ceramic assemblages: no dishes with a cylindrical upper section and biconical spindle-whorls with a large diameter of the hole have been found. Presence of a large number of burnished and slightly burnished fragments (45,7 %) and discovered remains of a construction with sunken bottom or a construction of a semi-underground type should be highlighted.
