The article deals with the history of social dialectology and describes the results of multiyear studies on colloquial speech conducted at Perm State University. It is shown that the research is carried out by Perm linguists with regard to the interaction of territorial and social factors. The foundations of social dialectology were laid by dialectological studies which considered the language of a certain village (Akchim) as a real functioning system. Further progress in this research area was connected with the study of literary language within the social-territorial framework; conceptual foundations for literary language local variation were developed. Investigation into non-literary modes of urban speech (professional and jargon communication) was synchronously carried out. All this made it possible to further develop the theory of sociolect and its types, as well as to move to studying urban sociolects. The current stage of social dialectology development at Perm University is characterized by attention not only to social language variation itself, but also to cultural and psychological determination of linguistic facts. Linguistic issues related to subcultural formations are also being investigated.
