Socio-demographic analysis of the concept of workforce

The article analyzes the main issues of investigating the concept of the workforce within the framework of the socio-demographic approach. The range of controversial issues related to the establishment of lower and upper limits of working age is determined. The basic principles of their change in the social systems of different historical periods, from primitive systems to capitalism, are traced. It is noted that the higher the level of development of society, the longer a person is engaged in labor activity, and simultaneously with the creation of conditions for maintaining the subject’s working capacity, the requirements for its functionality also increase. The conclusion is made that a sociological approach should be applied to the analysis of the concept of the workforce and, in particular, to determining the boundaries of working age, which is crucial in light of the rapid aging of the world population and the need to change the pension policies of a number of states.
