Socio-economic aspects of the elimination of illiteracy in the Astrakhan province/district in the 1920

In the Astrakhan province, there was an unfavorable situation in the field of education and public enlightenment. A rural population, most of which was illiterate, dominated the region. The Soviet state is beginning to pursue a policy to combat the illiterate population, but due to problems in the economy, the process was very slow and difficult. The elimination of illiteracy in the territory of the studied region had a number of specific features. The predominance of the rural population, the diverse national composition, the different level of development of the peoples, all this created significant difficulties in working with the illiterate population.
