Socio-economic problems of the population of the Republic of Buryatia in the 1990s on the pages of leading republican newspapers

In the article, the authors consider the reflection of the socio-economic problems of the population of the Republic of Buryatia during the period of cardinal transformations that took place in the country in the 1990s on the pages of the republican periodicals “Pravda Buryatia” and “Youth of Buryatia”. Economic reforms created a crisis in the country. The standard of living of the population was sharply declining, problems were growing, such as trade shortages, huge rise in prices, falling incomes of the population, progression of unemployment. Since the time of “perestroika”, the media has acquired new functions and it has become the “mouthpiece” of the time. They served as a conductor of new values, attitudes, and behaviors. After all, all the socio-economic and socio-political changes that took place in the country, in particular in Buryatia, were reflected in the pages of republican newspapers. Publications in periodicals supplement the historical picture of the time. This work examines the articles of periodicals focused on the description of the social problems of the citizens of the Republic of Buryatia as one of the subjects of the Russian Federation. The publications quite fully reflected the characteristics of the time, gave us the opportunity to assess the progress of the implementation of reforms at a great extent, as well as their con-sequences and the reaction of the population to innovations
