Subject. The article is devoted to the analysis of cause-and-effect relationships of changes in the demographic situation in the Smolensk region, as well as in a number of regions of the Central Federal District (CFD). The preservation and increase of the population for any region is the most important strategic task, the relevance of which has only increased in recent years. This is primarily due to the negative dynamics of population change in most of the regions under consideration. The importance of this issue explains the interest of specialists in the field of economics and management in this area of research, as evidenced by numerous publications in domestic and foreign publications. The article examines the dynamics of changes in the components of demographic processes, such as population migration, mortality and fertility rates in the period from 2005 to 2022. Methodology. To identify the factors that have the greatest impact on the considered indicators based on the available statistical data, a multidimensional correlation analysis was performed. According to the selected indicators and factors, a cluster analysis was performed, which identified five clusters with similar indicators.
