A sociological analysis of the problematic status of occupational gender segregation in Russia

The research attempts to reveal whether the current occupational gender segregation in Russia is a problem to be solved. Based on the original methods avoiding the comparative characteristics with foreign countries, the author presents the results of public opinion polls and compares them with decent work indicators demonstrating equal occupational treatment. The study is based on the analysis of disparities in wages and career opportunities for men and women, on the one hand, and public assessment of the current level of gender segregation, on the other. At the same time, both objective and subjective prerequisites for it are taken into account. The author proves that the current level of occupational gender segregation in Russia is permissible and does not pose a problem due to the lack of significant contradictions between women’s professional needs and the possibilities for their satisfaction.
