The article deals with the main figures associated with the formation of the sociology of sports in France (Pierre Bourdieu, Jean Baudrillard, Michel Foucault) and in Germany (Theodor Adorno). The key figures, characteristic features and main directions of research in the sociology of sports in each of the aforementioned countries are highlighted. It is noted that the focus of researchers is on such issues as the relationship between sports and politics, violence and sports, the impact of the media on sports, as well as the use of sport to construct corporeality. The conclusion is drawn that modern sociology of sports is a heterogeneous subject field comprising many different strands of research. It is noted that the leaders in this field are sociologists from the UK and the USA, however, research on this topic is also being conducted in continental Europe.
