The paper deals with studying the interference of meanings, sense relations in the statement with a verb ‘to mean'. This verb is interesting to be analyzed for it has different meanings and «means something» itself. When a person wants to know about the meaning of anything he usually asks: What does it mean? What is the meaning of...? What is it meant to be? etc. The verb ‘to mean' has dictionary definitions «to cause», «to signify». In passive constructions this verb is used to speak about an aim, purpose. The verb ‘to mean' has an Indo-European root «mind». It proves the fact that the verb ‘to mean' has something mental, it used to describe man's mental activity. The result shows that the content of the statement with a verb ‘to mean' is varied. It includes the senses of cause and effect, sign, association, condition, purpose etc. This proves the fact that language and mind can't be separated, that a word expresses the content of mind and thought.
