The article deals with the history of recognition of the iconic American poet Emily Dickinson by fellow citizens in the years of literary modernism formation in the USA. In Russian literary studies researchers do not pay attention to the fact that Dickinson’s “rehabilitation” coincided with the wave of popularity of metaphysical poetry in the USA. It was chosen by modernists in their discussion with Romanticism as a model of poetic language. In many respects Dickinson was regarded as modern by analogy with English metaphysics. It is proved due to the analysis of the articles devoted to the creative works by E.Dickinson written in the early 30-s of the XXth century and Hart Crane's dedication to her also analysed in the article. Positioning Dickinson as a metaphysical poet reveals complexity and ambiguity of the concept of metaphysical poetry in American literary criticism.
