The political views of modern youth determine the nature and vector of their participation in the political life of society. The article presents an analysis of the results of an empirical study among students aimed at studying young people’s political preferences in Northern Caucasus, Central, Siberian and Far Eastern federal districts of the Russian Federation. The study analyzed the relationship between different groups of students who consider themselves to be loyal and protest groups with a pronounced active or passive attitude towards politics. It shows differences in the distribution of self-assessment of students’ political activity depending on religious preferences (Christianity, Islam) across regions. The trend of a low degree of influence of traditional religious preferences of young people living in socially stable regions on protest activity is revealed. Atheistically minded young people have the greatest protest potential, referring themselves to the active or passive part of the protest group. The authors carried out the analysis of students' opinions about the level of attractiveness of political parties, adherence to a certain ideology, significant social and political values, depending on their religious preferences.
