This article analyzes the basic pragmatic functions performed by phraseological units (PU) of the Japanese and English languages. The most important PU functions we refer communicative, nominative, neutral denominative, cognitive, volitional, productive, stylistic, cumulative, directive, resuming, evaluating, contact making and function of speech laconization.
