Antioxidant system in adolescents with neuroendocrine obesity

We evaluated the antioxidant system in 40 adolescent males (aged 16-18 years) with neuroendocrine obesity. We found that participants with obesity had increased activity of glutathione peroxidase and elevated daily excretion of melatonin, whereas adolescents with neuroendocrine obesity and insulin resistance had decreased antioxidant activity of blood. It indicates that insulin resistance triggers the development of oxidative stress in overweight patients, thus, facilitating obesity.
