The study considers the reasons for the decline in pedigree sheep breeding in the first years of the sovereign Kyrgyz Republic. The issue under review is analyzed on the basis of statistical archival data. It was noted that agricultural sector was uncontrollably and inequitably privatized. Because of a fraud conducted by several local authorities and heads of households under the guise of privatization, the breeding plants ceased to function, and some of them lost their status as domestic breeding centers. Due to the fact that there were unresolved issues of financing, state support and control of pedigree sheep farms subsidized by the Soviet government during the agrarian and land reform, their facilities and equipment, the number and productivity of pedigree sheep had declined over years. The research is based on previously unpublished materials obtained from the Central State Archives of the Kyrgyz Republic, Osh and Jalal-Abad regional state archives.
