“The State of the Seminary is Unsatisfactory due to the Disorderly Management…”: the First Theological Schools’ Audits after the Reform of Theological Educational Institutions in 1867

Nowadays researchers are particularly interested in the history of the formation and development of theological education in Russia. The process of repeated reformations at theological schools testified to the need for constant improvement and correction of the situation in theological education. The years from 1867 to 1869 became an important dividing line in the history of national theological school: the reform of the entire theological education system contributed to the change of theological educational institutions’ structure. This article is based on the results of the first audits at theological seminaries after the 1867 reform, carried out in the same year by N. A. Sergievsky, Director of the Chief Prosecutor’s Office.
