The situation with internal party control in the USSR in November 1938 – June 1939 (based on the material from the Upper Volga region)

The article is devoted to one episode in the history of Soviet party political control and its specific authority - the Party Control Commission of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. The author makes an attempt to identify the status and key activities of the Commission’s institutions such as party boards and authorized persons (using regional sources) during the crucial period of the Great Terror’s aftermath. The article is based on archive sources most of which are researched for the first time. The author outlines the functions of internal party control, its impact on the social, economic and political development of Ivanovo and Yaroslavl’ regions, as well as interaction of the Commissions' officials with central and local authorities.
