In most polyneuropathies, nerve fibers of all sizes are involved in the pathological process, but in some cases, lesions are limited mainly to either large or small fibers. The main indication for the detection of antiganglioside antibodies is Guillain-Barre syndrome; anti-GM1 antibodies are identified in 22-30 % of patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome. Their level correlates with disease severity: it is maximal in the acute phase and decreases later. IgG anti-GD1b antibodies were detected in rare cases in patients with sensory neuropathy.
