Soviet national policy practices and neocolonial interpretations through the prism of feature cinema in 1946–1991

This article studies Soviet practices of counteracting neocolonial discourse and the main narratives of Western bloc propaganda in Cold War period in the sphere of national policy using the example of one of the most effective means of propaganda – feature cinema. Based on archival materials, published sources, materials of Soviet and American periodicals, the analysis of the organizational and production system of the Soviet film industry was conducted, key narratives of Soviet feature films created at central and republican film studios were identified. The results of the study proved the high efficiency of the created organizational and production system in the development of national cinematographies. The analysis of the representation of plots and images in Soviet feature films allows us to identify a number of key plots aimed at creating the image of a national hero in films with historical themes, strengthening the narrative of the unity and brotherhood of the Soviet peoples, their common Motherland, as well as the significant achievements of the Soviet system.
