The author provides the philosophical understanding of modern society as information society. A theoretical analysis of the postindustrial, informationalist and postmodernist understanding of a new type of society made it possible to conclude that the most complete and holistic understanding of it is possible only on the basis of a synthesis of ideas developed within the framework of these approaches. It is substantiated that modern society is information, since the socio-cultural consequences caused by the progressive development of information and communication technologies have spread far beyond the technosphere and were extrapolated to all spheres of life of modern society, changing the methods of production, socio-cultural reality, people and their culture. It is concluded that an integral characteristic of information modernity is the global information space produced by information and communication technologies, in the virtual environment of which the existence of a modern person partly takes place, communication is virtualized, the main types of activity, the anthropological complemented by a digital component
