Modern teacher education: reforms and results

This article analyses the current condition of the Russian teacher education. It gives a detailed description of the reforms implemented in this sector, and their intermediate results. A particular emphasis is made on the issues of the upgrading of the system of teacher education and the transition from a fouryear Bachelor's programme to a traditional five-year specialist programme. The article raises the question of the professional motivation of future students of teacher's institutes.
