Current state and problems of the livestock industry in the Southern Federal District

The current state of the livestock industry in the Southern Federal District is analyzed in the framework of the scientific research: changes in the livestock population, production of products – meat, milk, eggs, wool in the context of forms of management and entities that make up the studied macro-region; in the development of the livestock industry there are both positive results, expressed, in particular, in the growth of meat and milk production in agricultural organizations and the farm sector, and negative trends, associated, among other things, with the reduction in the livestock population in the macro-region and decrease in production of all types of products under consideration in the household farms. The Southern Federal District makes a significant contribution to the country's food security, but there are problems that have a negative impact on the development of its livestock industry. The scientific research allowed to determine the current trends in the development of this industry, to highlight the problems that lead to the reduction of livestock population, reduction of production volumes, and to outline certain directions of their solution, which are, among other things, related to improving material and technical equipment of agricultural producers; increasing processing capacity; building effective interaction between agrarians and processing enterprises; improving fodder production and the creation of a sustainable fodder base; the development of selection and breeding work; the establishment of a mechanism for the sale of products through the system of consumer co-operation; involvement in the intensification of production of small forms of management, which play an important role in the livestock industry of the district. At the same time, state support plays an important role in solving the problems considered in the framework of conducted scientific research.
