The article presents the modern approaches of Russian authors to the analysis of the concept of welfare state. An analysis of the historiography of the problems of the welfare state allows us to conclude about the interdisciplinary nature of the research object. Each science forms its own subject and research methodology. The welfare state model appears to be a stage in the development of a late industrial society. With the transition to a post-industrial society, the welfare state does not disappear, but transforms. The Russian model of the welfare state is significantly influenced by the historical experience of paternalism of the Soviet and pre-Soviet eras. Global trends in demography, digitalization and inequality appear to be challenges for the existing model of a welfare state not only in Russia, but also in foreign countries. The response to the challenges presupposes the modernization of social policy from above and public initiative from below. The reproduction of human capital and the quality of life of the population are becoming priority goals, and the development of technology, economic growth, trade and military blocs are the means to achieve these goals.
