The paper gives an overview of the technology of wear resistant coatings for cutting tools in application to the problems of modern metalworking. Considered the original technologies of hardening cutting edge of replaceable profile inserts. Are new, including the types of nanostructured wear-resistant coatings. Presents results of field tests of the modified instrument, which allowed to prove the feasibility of applying these processes in tool production.
