“Savior in powers” and Psalter: once more towards the problem of the iconography title

Among the attempts to interpret Russian iconography of “Saviour in Powers” which occupied the place of the centerpiece of the Deesis row of the 15th-17th centuries high iconostasis, there were some assumptions about the contents of its title. So, there is a view of the relationship of the iconography and its name with the words of Ps 23:9-10. Another opinion is that the words of Ps 150:2 are its name origin. To check and analyze the latest provisions this article takes the text of Ps 150:2 as it was in the Slavic manuscripts in different translations, editions and versions of the Slavonic Psalter. In addition, there considered the interpretations of this verse contained in the Slavonic manuscripts. It is shown that back to the 13th-14th centuries, that is long before the time of occurrence of the iconography and, especially, of its name, which known only from the middle of the 16th century, the archaic reading “in powers” in Ps 150:2 in Russian manuscripts had been preserved almost exclusively in Pseudo-Athanasius Commentated Psalter, which existed in very few manuscripts...
