The article is devoted to the features of the concept of functional products that have a positive effect on health in addition to basic human nutrition. Classifications such as “ordinary food”, modified foods, and synthesized food ingredients are considered. Having marked the chronography of the appearance of specialized products: Japan is the first state that laid the foundation for functional nutrition. Today it is the only country recognizing functional products as a separate category. After analyzing the food industry in developed countries, the reference point is a “healthy nation”; in Japan, England, the USA, Germany, France and several other countries, state programs are being implemented to improve the population by developing and organizing the production of food components that adjust the biochemical composition of consumer goods. Thus, we carried out an analysis of the concept of a functional product and government organizations to regulate this area. Based on this, it can be concluded that the use of specialized products makes it possible to minimize the use of drugs for humans, reducing the incidence and increasing the ability of the basic functions of the body.
