Specific features of female names in China: extra-linguistic aspect

Бесплатный доступ

The article reviews specific features of female names in China. Chinese traditional culture has been evolving for over thousands of years, and although every period of Chinese history has its own distinctive features of motives and nomination functions, the analysis of male and female names of different eras shows that the characters used in some periods preserve their usage and retain universality. Extra-linguistic characteristics were also important in the formation of Chinese female antroponimic systems, but unlike the linguistic features, they changed much in different historical periods. For example, in medieval China female names had many restrictions, they could be used exclusively within the female half of the house and never used outdoors. Later, in the Tang era, when social morals became more free, women also gained a certain freedom.
