Statement of the problem. In Russian linguistics, there is a description of the genres of ancient Russian literature based on the basic emotional semantics of a group of texts and the structure of emotionally filled situations. Among such genres, the (folk) lament situation turns out to be somewhat underestimated. The authors offer a relatively detailed description of both the lament situation itself in the oldest Russian chronicle, the Primary Chronicle (lit. The Tale of Bygone Years), and its continuation in the list of the Laurentian Chronicle, as well as the typology, structural and semantic content of the lament situation. The purpose of the article is to identify ways to represent the lament situation in the corpus of the Primary Chronicle as part of the Laurentian Chronicle and its continuation (the Suzdal Chronicle). Methodology and research methods. The main methods of analysis are to identify patterns of lament situation based on their comparison in different time layers of the analyzed texts, and to describe ways of their representation in the chronicle text. Research results. A structural and semantic description of the lament patterns has been made in the Russian Primary Chronicle according to the chronicle list in the Laurentian Chronicle. Conclusion. The analysis of patterns and structures of situations of personal and collective emotional manifestations described in chronicle texts is of great importance for understanding the development of the Old Russian system of genres. The situation of lament has the potential to transform into a separate genre, which makes it an additional source of interest. The authors’ contribution lies in analyzing the lament situations in the Primary Chronicle and its continuation in the Laurentian Chronicle, thereby providing a basis for examining situations of emotional expression in later Old Russian chronicles and narrative texts.
