Reference services in US libraries: from the classical model to the multilevel one

The purpose of the article is to trace the genesis of the concept of reference services and the evolution of its practical implementation in US libraries; to characterize the classical model of reference services, to show its main features; to identify the reasons that prompted libraries to embark on the path of reforming the traditional model of reference services and the transition to the organizational model of multilevel reference services.
