The article dwells upon simile as a trope based on the figurative comparison of two different by nature objects and phenomena on the basis of a feature essential for one of the members of comparison. In the English language simile is expressed on the levels of morphology, vocabulary and syntax. The most widely used conjunction in the comparative constructions of the novel is the conjunction «like». It is revealed that the author of the novel uses full syntactic similes which carry out cognitive and evaluative functions. The role of simile as a means of conveying the author ’s attitude, creative thinking and individual style is shown. Simile helps in portrait description and in revealing psychological conditions of the characters. The similes chosen by the characters of the novel reveal the traits of the subject of the utterance itself. Besides, the similes used in the novel are the form of the author ’s presence in the book. J. Darling doesn’t apply old similes (e.g. from folklore), she uses the convergence of the subjects from everyday life. The similes are writer’s individual ones.
