The concept of environment is widely used in Russian pedagogy. However, there are a number of problems of application of this concept in educational theory and educational practice. Often the value of environment is either exaggerated or downplayed. There is a lot of confusion in the treatment and interpretation of environment and its methodological elaboration in modern research. The concept of environment can not be reduced to space, culture, sphere and a number of similar concepts. One of the most developed theories in which environment is not just a condition and a factor, but a means of development and formation of personality is an environmental approach to education, which allows controlling environment influences in the process of human education and evolution. The problematic issues raised in this article are waiting for responses, both in theoretical studies and in the description of practical experience.
