Establishment and development of the banking system of the Russian empire in the XVIII - beginning of the XX centuries: pre-revolutionary national historiography of the problem

The article gives the analysis of the pre-revolutionary Russian historiography devoted to the history of establishing and developing financial and credit institutions of the Russian Empire in the XVIII - beginning of the XX centuries. The assessments and views of the Russian authors on the formation and evolution of the Russian banking system, changes in the governmental policies towards financial and credit institutions have been given. The author has made the analysis of the works of generalizing character as well as of those in which the activity of certain types of banks and specific credit and financial organizations making up the financial system of the state considered.
