The paper discusses the process of formation and development of the history faculty of the Abakan State Pedagogical Institute in 1944-1963. The study was carried out in accordance with the methodological apparatus of historical science based on the principles of historicism, consistency and objectivity, as well as the use of historical-genetic and historical-systemic methods. According to statistics, in the late 1930s 52 % of teachers in Khakassia did not have a special pedagogical education. At the same time, the network of schools grew rapidly, which increased the staffing problem. Secondary educational institutions operated in the region were the Khakass Pedagogical College and the Abakan Teachers' Institute, but they could not ensure the release of the required number of teachers. The opening of the university was an objective necessity, in connection with which in 1944, on the basis of the Teachers' Institute, the Abakan State Pedagogical Institute was established, which became the firstborn of higher education in Khakassia. The Faculty of History was one of the first to be established; it functioned until 1963. The authors distinguish two stages of formation and development. The first stage (1944 - mid 1950s) coincided with the formation of the institute itself. At this time, the leadership had to solve a number of important problems: to create the material and technical base of the university, to increase the student body, to form the teaching staff. Here the main directions in the work of the faculty were laid: educational, ideological and educational and research. The second stage (mid 1950s - early 1960s) was the time of the development of the faculty. The Faculty of History conducted systematic work on the preparation of qualified teaching staff. The teaching staff of the Faculty of History has significantly increased, which has affected the improvement of the quality of teaching. Employees were engaged in active scientific and social work, provided methodological assistance to teachers of the city and the region. Thus, at the second stage of its existence, the activities of the Faculty of History of the Abakan Pedagogical Institute were versatile, focused both on the professional training of future history teachers, and on assisting already working teaching staff, on educating the general population of the Khakass Autonomous Region.
