The problem of continuous pedagogical education is considered, the conceptual and terminological analysis of which made it possible to identify its semantic and content characteristics as a system. A historical and philosophical review of the concept of “lifelong education” has been carried out. A variety of approaches to defining the corresponding term in international studies and the works of Russian scientists is presented. Social, theoretical and practical prerequisites for the study of the system of continuous pedagogical education have been identified and an attempt has been made to systematize them. The psychological and social orientations in the interpretation of continuing pedagogical education as a socio-pedagogical system with many interrelated components are considered. Attention is focused on the sociocultural, spiritual, moral and creative guidelines of this type of education, as well as on the relationship of teaching and educational contexts that systematically lead to the professional competence of a morally mature personality.
