The article presents the history of the formation of cello art in China from the XVIII century to the beginning of the XXI century. The process of integration of the cello into Chinese musical culture is examined, starting from the Qing dynasty, when Western musical instruments began to penetrate into China through cultural and trade contacts, with close attention paid to the role of Western diplomats and missionaries, in particular such individuals as Sir Robert Harte, in popularizing the cello among the Chinese aristocracy and intellectuals. The study covers the significant influence of Russian emigrants in the late XIX and early XX centuries, especially in large Europeanized cities like Harbin, where Russian musicians helped create a rich musical environment. The period of the Republic of China (1911 1949) is highlighted as key for the development of cello art, with an emphasis on educational institutions in Harbin, Shanghai and Beijing, where cello art was taught and continues to be taught. The period of the Anti Japanese War and World War II is also explored in some detail, when many musicians moved to safe regions, among them Sichuan and Shanghai are especially noted, which contributed to the preservation and development of musical activity. The post war years saw a revival of cello art, especially in the context of educational programs and music festivals, and in particular the famous SuperCello festival organized by the eminent cellist Chu Yi Bing. The modern development of cello art in China is characterized by increasing popularity and professionalism among musicians, the integration of the cello into traditional Chinese music, and improved music education.
