The article deals with the problem of static portraiture in the early novels of I. S. Turgenev (1844-1854). We have analyzed the development of a static portrait. Its typization function and "stereotypeness" shows the close connection of Turgenev’s portrait with the genre of "physiological sketch" and typical portraiture of a human with dominant of socio-specific features. The identified individual details and elements of romantic discription in a portrait of Turgenev’s heroine are opposed to portrait typicality. Family portrait underlines the importance of hereditary factors determining the nature and destiny of a human. The writer creates two or three character sketches with focus on development of the heroines’ feelings; therefore, it means that he goes beyond socio-specific features in portraiture of a character.
