Coffee is one of the best-traded agricultural commodities in the world, with 70 percent of the total coffee production amounting to USD 19 billion exported in 2018 alone. In the same year, the sector had a market value of US $ 83 billion, employing 125 million people. Coffee is grown on 12.5 million farms around the world, of which 67-80 percent are smallholder farmers, mostly in developing countries. The largest producing and exporting countries in 2018, regardless of human development, were Brazil, Vietnam and Colombia, while the largest importing countries were the United States, Germany and France. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has made huge changes in the industry, showing a sharp decline in coffee consumption in restaurants and cafes, coffee imports have grown by 5.1%, which has only a positive impact on the coffee industry. In general, the growth in coffee supply outpaced demand. This paper presents statistics on consumption, exports, production and trade data, as well as global trends in the coffee business, compiled using a combination of government reports, industry reports and data from our own research.
