The purpose of this paper is to clarify the place and role of the statute in English legal doctrine and legal practice. The author uses the method of researching scientific concepts, the method of interpretation of judicial precedents, allowing to understand the statute as a special legal phenomenon. The paper notes three features of the statutes: 1) it is adopted in judicial procedure; 2) the statute regulates wide spheres of public relations, but at the same time, it regulates specific legal situations; 3) the statute is stable in its regulatory provisions. The author hypothesizes that local acts as statutes are derived (from higher statutes) in nature. This, in turn, allows us to formulate a thesis on the subordinate nature of the statutes of English law.
