The article considers the evolution in the image of St. Petersburg created by Vs.S. Solovyov. In the novel "The Young Emperor" Peter II's life in Moscow isfilled with entertainment, Petersburg is depicted as a symbol of the stability ofthe state, only there can the royal power be realized. In "The Chronicle of Four Generations" the capital is depicted as the focus of envy and intrigue. Basedon the opposition between the capital and the province in "Eugene Onegin" by A.S. Pushkin and in "War and Peace" by L.N. Tolstoy, Solovyov shows thattrue life is possible only in the province.
