The paper presents the results of monitoring of the targets of the “Development Strategy of the Fuel and Energy Complex of the Republic of Buryatia to 2030”. It shows the decrease of the growth rates in electricity consumption as compared to the targets set forth in the Development Strategy. As a result, the launch of generating assets and a number of main power transmission lines lags behind. Despite the generally positive situation in terms of electricity supply to customers, challenges are arising in several hubs of the electric energy system - in northern and eastern districts of Buryatia and in the heating supply system of Ulan-Ude. In the existing situation, the authors propose to focus financial resources on the expansion of Central Heating and Power Plant No.2 in Ulan-Ude, which will help address the issues of the future development of Ulan-Ude, increasing the reliability of the heating power supply, and improving the environmental situation. It will also increase economic efficiency and reliability of electric power supply in Buryatia in general.
